In the bakehouse, the wanderer approaches her table with his platter. Her cheeks flush, as he sets down a slice of the cardamom crumble she denied herself earlier. Her tongue prickles when she smells the caramelised ginger zest.

Almost immediately, he strides away without it. A dream weaver hovers above, its wings stirring up the air.

She reaches over and crams the slice into her mouth, swiping up the last crumb. Her eyelids lower, as she senses soft saffron smoke curling beneath her mother’s hands once again.

When she looks up, he is returning with a steaming mug of brew.
