Finding my flow

My creating time is sacred and my routine meets me where I am in my current stage of life.

  • A Cluttered Desk

    Many recommend working from an uncluttered desk.  That's not me, but I know where everything is at all times.

  • Office Hours

    I prefer to write in the mornings, when the house is quiet. Driving is dreaming, conceptualising or figuring-out time.

  • Snoring Supervisors

    I work under the strict supervision of four Brussels Griffons. They snore, and insist on sleeping on my lap, at my feet and against my back on my chair. It is uncomfortable and difficult to move, but I wouldn't change it.

Notebooks and pencils

Essential for researching and drafting

Before I start typing or illustrating, I always work in pencil on printing paper or in my A4 lined notebooks. I love this exploratory stage of drafting ideas and researching concepts. 

iPad Pro

For Writing, Editing and Illustrating

To pull it all together, I use my iPad, with Scrivener (writing) and Procreate (illustration).

Community

It takes a village

I would not be where I am today without the wisdom, advice and encouragement from the many communities in which I find myself, both online and physically. They say it takes a village to raise a child - and this is so true of creating projects.

Creativity is a wild mind and a disciplined eye.

Why?

Why do you create? And why this particular story, or illustration? Dig deep. Why do you think the idea came to you? Why are you the best person to tell this story?

What and Who?

What is your genre of work? Genre also nudges you towards identifying your 'Who', your ideal reader.

Where, When and How?

This points to your creative routine in terms of where, when and how you feel most inspired to work. Play around with different scenarios. Each project seems to require its own Where, When and How.
