Creative Process

Finding my flow

Things fell into place for my writing when I chose to reshuffle the letters of 'Scared' to become 'Sacred'. My creating time and space is something sacred and my routine meets me where I am in my current stage of life.

  • A Cluttered Desk

Many recommend working from an uncluttered desk.  That's not me, but I definitely know where everything is at all times.

  • Office Hours

I prefer to write in the mornings, when the house is mostly quiet. I work up until lunchtime when I take a break to fetch my boys from school. Driving is dreaming, conceptualising or figuring-out time.

  • Snoring Supervisors

I work under the strict supervision of four Brussels Griffons. They snore, and insist on sleeping on my lap, at my feet and against my back on my chair. It is uncomfortable and incredibly difficult to move, but one of my dreams as a child was to be followed by a pack of dogs everywhere.... Yes, they do that too.

Guiding Principles

Ideas to keep in mind for your creativity

Why?

Why do you create? And why this particular story, or illustration? Dig deep. Why do you think the idea came to you? Why are you the best person to tell this story, for example?

What and Who?

What is your genre of work? Genre also nudges you towards identifying your 'Who', your ideal reader.

Where, When and How?

This points to your creative routine in terms of where, when and how you feel most inspired to work. Play around with different scenarios. Each project seems to require its own Where, When and How - it isn't cast in stone.
